What is Holistic Counselling?

The focus of holistic counselling is on the whole person.

It considers the body, mind, and spirit and how each of these elements interacts with the individual as a sum of many parts that are fundamentally related. This also includes factors such as the environment in which you were born, raised and currently located, the circumstances you have faced, who you choose to surround yourself with and the life you have led.  

One’s self-awareness and self-acceptance can develop with the aid of holistic counselling. It supports in the growth of more profound awareness and insight, the discovery of unconscious patterns and triggers, and the processing of both past and present life events. By addressing the root causes rather than just the symptoms, it can treat and modify harmful behaviours and routines.

During our sessions, you are gently guided to navigate your inner-landscape, your path of awareness, underpinned by the approach of deep self-inquiry.  

We often finish the session with some type of non talk-therapy such as a short guided meditation, moving meditation, pranayama (breathing techniques), Reiki, Heart Resonance, or a combination of any of these.

In the spaces in between each session, I provide you with a home practice so that you can explore and embody what comes up in each of your sessions.  I believe that this is where the magic really happens.

The spaces in between the sessions is a space of immense creativity where you begin to integrate the changes that you're being called to make.  There is no need to be concerned if you are wondering how to fit this in to a busy lifestyle.  Your home life and work life simply becomes part of the practice.

 Online or in-person (Brisbane location), this is your first Holistic Counselling session with Annie, where you will get to know each other and discuss your intentions for working together.

This is a double session where we explore extra areas where our usual 1 hour will not suffice.

Holistic counselling is for you if you feel powerless in any way, stuck in a cycle of limitations, empty, out of control or inadequate (just to name a few).  It's also for you if you feel like you need to heal from something but just can't seem to let go of the pain or come into a space of acceptance.  Limitations and the need to heal are unique to each individual.

It might present as a lack of direction, de-motivation, constant drama in interpersonal relationships, clinging or grasping for a sense of meaning in things, your job, or other people.  Maybe the same problem keeps re-surfacing over and over again, causing you to feel stuck and frustrated.  Maybe you feel consumed by things that have happened in the past.  Maybe you oscillate between feeling depressed and anxious, or everything just irritates you and you feel overwhelmed.  

Perhaps you constantly feel let down by loved ones, or yourself.  Perhaps you're exhausted and on the brink of burn-out.  Maybe you feel incomplete or even just curious about who you are, your potential, or your place in this world. You know there is more to your life, your purpose, but you're not quite sure what that is or where to start.  If you are ready for meaningful change, then I urge you to consider this powerful approach to transformation.

Absolutely not. Just for the record, I see 'problems' and 'issues' as not only a natural part of the ups and downs of life, but as portals of awakening. Also, a 'problem' can come down to a matter of perception. I have seen people who are simply seeking more clarity in their life purpose, or want to improve communication skills in their personal or professional life. Rather than seeing it as an avenue for 'fixing' or 'improving' something, I like to see it as an avenue for awakening to aspects of you that already exist. Some clients like to see me as their accountability buddy, or a soundboard or confidant for their thoughts, ideas, visions and self-inquiry. It's important to add here that, while you may have what seems like a simple one-dimensional issue, I invite you to keep an open mind and heart. Sometimes we might uncover patterns or underlying causes that are worthy of your attention in order to deal with the issue you came to me for. Part of this work allows you to raise your awareness about the multi-faceted, multi-layered and multi-dimensional nature of you and what you have in your life. That awareness allows you to tap into greater resources in order to cultivate your expansion and growth.

Techniques involve mainstream and alternative methods of therapy which may include psychotherapy, meditation and embodiment practices.  Every holistic counsellor is going to be uniquely different because of their therapeutic background, experience and preferred methods. Sessions are tailor-made to the individual.   My sessions are dynamic in that I offer a combination of talk-therapy and non talk-therapy.  The talk-therapy involves discussions exploring the key concepts about your presenting issue.  Then we move into some type of non talk-therapy such as guided meditation, reiki, meditative movement, EFT, pranayama (breathing techniques), or a combination of any of these. In the spaces in between each session, I provide you with homecare activities so that you can practice and embody what comes up in each of your sessions.  I believe that this is where the magic really happens - in the spaces in between the sessions - a space of immense creativity where you can start applying what you've explored and integrating it in different ways.

Allow 1.5-2 hours for your first session.  Expect a pot of hot tea and an opportunity to be seen and heard.  This is your time to let it all out.  No matter what issue/s you present with, I will obtain an overview of all aspects of your life - physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, relationships, work, social life, diet, exercise and I will also want to gain an understanding of challenges/traumas experienced at major stages in your life.  If time permits, we may even be able to add in some energy or sound healing treatments. The spiritual healing art of energy works by channeling universal life force energy into your body and allow your natural vibrational lifeforce to heal what needs to be healed.

Generally, a course of holistic counselling will be once per week for 8-12 weeks. After this, there is option to drop down to once per fortnight, once per month, or as needed, depending on how you feel. As your holistic counsellor, it's important for me to remain fluid and adaptable to your needs.
